Grupo Mayan operates many luxurious resorts throughout the Mexican country. While at any of our resorts you will find numerous activities to make your vacation memorable. Many Grupo Mayan guests also like to visit the surrounding towns and villages and other tourist attractions in the area. Grupo Mayan will be happy to arrange group transportation for you or you may choose to rent a car. We would like to offer the following advice on driving while in Mexico.
The best roads, and most well tended roads, are Mexico´s toll roads. These roads can be expensive but will get you to your destination faster. The toll roads are not as bumpy and make for a more comfortable ride.
Your car insurance from your home country is not recognized in Mexico. Mexico offers travel insurance for tourists and even though it is not required, Grupo Mayan staff recommends that you purchase a policy if you plan to drive while in the country.
There are checkpoints operated by the Mexican Army situated periodically on all roads. You are more likely to encounter them on roads near borders. While it may be a little nerve wracking, the checkpoints are not a problem for honest travelers. The Mexican Army is looking for drugs and guns. Grupo Mayan guests are advised to do what the soldiers asked you to do and be respectful. If you are wearing sunglasses you should remove them. You may be asked to unload things from the car; this is legal and the soldiers are trying to uphold the law.
Your driver´s license from your home country will be valid in Mexico. You may not drive without a license. Be aware that speeding tickets are issued to speeders and you might be required to be present at a hearing. The ticketing officer has the right to keep your license until the hearing, assuring your presence.
Grupo Mayan warns guests to avoid travel on roads at night. While it is dangerous to travel on unknown roads after dark, banditos have also been known to prowl in rural areas.
There is a new tool for mapping directions available in Mexico. It works similar to MapQuest in the United States. Traza Tu Ruta is a great service which allows you to map out your route. As the directions are in Spanish, anyone unfamiliar with the language can ask a Grupo Mayan staff member for assistance in travel planning. Good maps of Mexico are also available. They may be purchased in your home country or after you arrive in Mexico.
There is only one gas station company in Mexico. Pemex has locations all over Mexico and their prices are usually the same throughout the country. Before pumping your gas you should make sure the pump is reset. If all dials are not set at zero you will have to pay for more than you have pumped.
The Grupo Mayan staff will work to make your tours of the areas and attractions surrounding our resorts the best they can possibly be. Please let us know how we can assist you in your planning.
